It’s a message likely to resonate with Republicans in Congress – Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy He argued in December that the United States had entered a cold war with China — but so have several Democrats who joined the Republican Party this year to pass legislation recognizing the need to treat China less as an ally and more as a strategic threat. In early January, more than two-thirds of House Democrats voted with Republicans to create a new House committee to examine America’s strategic competition with China, and many voted with the Republican Party to block the sale of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to Chinese entities.

After a Chinese surveillance balloon was spotted over US soil and shot down by the Biden administration after it was allowed to cross the entire country at 60,000 feet, every Democrat voted with House Republicans to condemn China and demand more information about the incident.

In addition, all Republicans and Democrats in the House voted this month to pass a bill requiring the declassification of all information linking China to the COVID vaccine.

Both lawmakers praised the Heritage report for providing a blueprint for how to confront China, which the report warns has the potential to pose a long-term threat to the United States and its allies.

“To win the new Cold War, this plan calls for sustained US economic growth, greater political will, stronger foreign partnerships, secure borders, synchronized economic and security policies, resilient supply chains, enhanced military deterrence, and US energy independence,” the document said. . . “This plan simultaneously exposes the Chinese Communist Party’s aggressive tactics against the United States and represents a call to arms for all segments of American society, including state and local governments, the private sector, the American people, and US allies and partners abroad.”
