Ukrainian soldiers face intensive training program to get battle-ready

SOUTH WEST, ENGLAND – Five weeks ago, Sergey was a young artist and illustrator from Dnipro, Ukraine, exchanged his brush for lessons with a high-powered shotgun. This was not the path he had chosen, but he felt compelled to follow it. Behind his dark green visor and camouflage-clad helmet, he had no time to think about what would come after the rigorous drills he must accomplish each day.

He is one of more than 14,000 Ukrainians taking part in training in the UK. The military programme, designed to quickly bring new recruits into Ukraine’s Armed Forces within 35 days, provides them with a range of skills essential for survival on the front lines. Representatives from nine other allied countries are providing trainers and resources as part of the project, which aims to train 20,000 soldiers by the end of this year. Upon successful completion, Sergey and his other teammates will deploy to their home country, and are expected to be ready to join the fight immediately.

“I feel confident in the logistics I learned, the training, and how the coaches here teach us,” he said through an English translator. Standard recruits in the British Army receive 14 weeks of basic training.
