The fiancée of an art student who disappeared nearly 12 years ago has pleaded not guilty Two counts of murder in her death during a court appearance on Monday.

The charges stem from the August 2011 disappearance of Caitlin Markham, who was last seen at her Fairfield home. At the time, Markham was just weeks away from finishing her art degree at the Art Institute of Ohio-Cincinnati, and Carter said they were planning to move to Colorado later that year.

The skeletal remains identified as Markham’s were found in 2013 in a wooded area in Cedar Grove, Indiana, about 20 miles west of her home in Fairfield. Authorities ruled her death a homicide.

In February, Jonathan Palmerton was arrested in connection with Markham’s death on charges of perjury. Authorities said that case is still active, but no specific details have been released as to why he has been charged.
