Former President Donald Trump told Fox News on Tuesday that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have a friendly but strong relationship, recounting that he warned the former KGB agent against invading Ukraine.
Trump told Hannity he doesn’t like to brag about such things, but emphasized that Putin apparently understands not to invade another sovereign country while he’s president of the United States.
“Putin would never have gone to Ukraine. I was talking to him about it – I said ‘I’d better not do that.’ And it wouldn’t have happened – we had a very friendly conversation about it: I said, ‘Hey, Vladimir, you can’t go to Ukraine.'” .
As Putin carried out his invasion after President Biden took office, “Hannity” host Sean Hannity asked Trump why He claims “with such conviction” that the Russian strongman would have backed down if re-elected.
“Because he knew not to mess with me, I don’t want to say that,” Trump said, before adding a footnote.
“You know why? Because you say—oh—I don’t like people who say ‘Oh, they fear me’ like unhingers. I don’t want to say it, but do they fear me? I guess they do.”
Trump continued his narrative of giving then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel a white flag, which he has claimed in previous interviews that the CDU leader did not initially understand what that meant.
“You had never heard of Nord Stream 2 until you came here. [It’s] The pipeline is the biggest pipeline in the world – they’re building it for Germany,” he said, adding that he had sent Merkel’s flag as a symbol of her “surrender” to the Russians on energy security.
He said, “I said, ‘Angela, are you crazy?'” “She has also let millions of people into our country, who may have permanently corrupted her country as you know.”
Trump added The Berlin delegation mocked him during a speech to the United Nations, during which he warned of Russia’s economic deals with European countries in this regard.
“They thought it was so funny when I said ‘Germany shouldn’t have done a deal with Russia on Nord Stream 2 – on a pipeline that supplies them with energy’… They don’t laugh anymore.”
Trump also said the Chinese spy balloon incident could not have happened as it did under Biden’s watch – the floating vessel cruised freely in Alaska, into Canada, entered the Lower 48 in the Mountain West, and continued unimpeded all the way to the Carolina coast where it was finally shot down over Ocean.
Hannity noted that the audience might not have known about the stage if not for the eager-eyed Montaigne with the camera.
“I wouldn’t have done anything with the balloon because it wouldn’t have happened under my command,” he said.
“They wouldn’t have done that,” Trump said. “I’m just telling you – like Putin never went to Ukraine.”
