a A public university in IndianaNew guidelines for inclusive employment emphasize fairness credentials over traditional meritocracy—and even suggest new professors speak, dress, and act in “ways that resonate authentically” with ethnic minorities.

Indiana University Purdue University’s Office of Academic Affairs released a document obtained by Fox News Digital outlining “holistic faculty search practices” to improve recruiting, and advisory committees “must move away from abstract concepts of ‘merit’ and ‘fitness’.”

The guidance states that “merit and decency are social constructs grounded in prevailing notions of ‘vocational qualifications considered worthy, and personal traits and styles considered suitable for the position’.

In one section, the directive contrasts “traditional appropriateness” and “equitable fit” values, saying that a traditional prospective worker will treat learning “as an individual project in which students are responsible for their own success or failure” while “appropriateness includes prioritizing” the knowledge and needs of ethnically lesser students while viewing learning as a “collaborative project”.

The document urges “concern for equity and inclusiveness” and closing “equity gaps”.

The document goes on to detail “traditional merit” versus “equitable merit,” and “training,” “experience,” “research,” and “teaching” have different meanings when examined through the lens of “traditional merit” and “equitable merit.”
