Last week, the Biden administration posted a flashy video of President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama to social media created through CapCut, The app is owned by ByteDancethe Chinese technology company that owns TikTok.
The China-based company’s data collection on TikTok users and its ties to the Chinese Communist Party has made it a target of bans from the US government. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are considering a general ban of the app on US devices.
That Team Biden would use the ByteDance app for its social media content, after overseeing a US government ban on TikTok for government devices over the same security concerns, would seem cynical and even hypocritical.
Even more ironic is that on the same day the video was posted, CEO of TikTok He was in Washington, D.C. while being questioned by Congress regarding the potential threat its application had to the national security of the United States.
The video released by the Biden team showed an image of two US presidents standing side by side, while cool CapCut edits were used to add pyrotechnics and clipping effects to the image.
Biden’s communications team also used the CapCut effect to create an eye-catching photo wheel with peppy electronic music playing in the background. The text above the image gave a shout-out to the Affordable Care Act, which was signed into law during the Obama/Biden administration.
The text read, “Just letting everyone know that the Affordable Care Act is still the law of the land.”
NBCNews.com reviewed the video He claimed that it is “frame for frame exactly the same as the popular CapCut template, although the company’s watermark is not visible and the White House copy appears slightly enlarged. It is possible to download the template without the watermark.”
The report added, “The music — an audio file called ‘Happy With You’ originated from the TikTok Official Sound Studio — is the same as the template’s accompanying music.”
Once again, the Biden administration has indicated it will move to ban TikTok from phones across the US due to its association with ByteDance, unless the app is sold to another company.
Biden has been called out before for using TikTok despite the security risks the president has acknowledged.
CBS anchor “Face The Nation” Grilled Margaret Brennan White House Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby this week because Biden made a TikTok with former One Direction star Niall Horan at the White House on St. Patrick’s Day. She called it “hypocrisy”.
Although Kirby responded, “It’s not on government agencies. We have legitimate national security concerns.”
He added, “I’d just like to tell you, again, our concerns on the national security front are valid. We’ve banned it across all government agencies. We have to get past this CFIUS.” [Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S] Review to see the result before moving on. In the meantime, again, the President welcomes Congress’ action on the Restraint Act.”
